Korean Martial Arts
|
Tae Kwon Do is the official martial art of Korea, and you can find a place to study almost as easily as you can find a convenience store (sports/leisure links).
Don't think, though, that you can't study another fighting form. Possibly rivaling Tae Kwon Do in popularity is Hapkido. This martial art is what you might consider a hybrid of Tae Kwon Do and Judo. That's not the absolute best breakdown but it's sufficient.
Finding a Tae Kwon Do school is very easy which is also true for Hapkido.
Judo and Kumdo aren't as popular but you won't struggle trying to find a school. Be aware, though, that the majority of students are still in public school so finding a partner of your strength and size might be difficult - that is if you're big. The cost of a membership in a school is usually around from 50,000 won. If you are able to join a university club, chances are the cost will be drastically reduced, possibly even free. The other benefit of attempting to join a university club is the increased chance you'll find someone who can speak some English. If language is not a problem, then going to a private school (i.e. Business) will be fine.
I can't recommend enough to try out a martial art. Some of them are much more strenuous and demanding but even the least demanding of a martial art will do your mind and body a vast amount of good.
