Celebrations and Special Days
Some of the Korean National celebration days to keep a watch out for are:
  • Children's Day - Normally in May. It used to be a public holiday but from 2003 on it is to be celebrated on a Saturday. This is the day all children are honored and given special gifts and treatments.
  • Teacher's Day - Wonderful day to look out for. Normally in May and traditionally a time of giving gifts and thanks to the teachers. You could definitely gain a few lovely presents at this time.
  • Arbor Day - Tree planting day in April. All Koreans are expected to plant a tree. This used to be a public holiday but in 2003 on it will be always celebrated on a Saturday.
  • Korean Thanks Giving (Chosuk) - Around September/start of October. You will be expected to make gifts such as little rice cakes. This is another time of gift giving for Koreans and a very special family time. Make sure you understand the importance of this time, as you will get at least 1-3 days holiday at this time.
  • New Year - Depending on the moon?s cycles this is the end of January to early February. This is again a very special time for all Asian countries, and you will have 1-3 day?s holiday at this time.

Here are some general days the school will most likely promote. So be prepared with classroom activities for the following times:
  • Easter
  • Mother?s Day
  • Halloween
  • Christmas
  • American Thanksgiving
  • The start of spring, winter, fall and summer
  The Importance of Children's Birthdays
Top of Page
There will be a little confusion regarding birthdays among your children because there is the Korean way of understanding and celebrating birthday times and the incorporation of Western thinking with a celebration on the actual day you were born.

It is a good idea to do some research into how this all works. Usually on one special day of every month the school will throw a big birthday party complete with cake and balloons for the celebration of all the children born that month. You will get to share this day and also get to share the chaos that follows the cake eating when all timetabled classes don?t seem to exist as you planned!
