Korean children go to Korean state school when they turn 7 years old (in NZ or USA this is 6 years old, as a Korean child is 1 year old at birth!). They are sent to private teaching academies (hogwons) when they are 5 years old (Korean age) for 2 years of intensive teaching in English before they attend state school.

Kindergarten children who usually arrive at 9.30am and leave at 2pm are provided with lunch by the school and have an hours break time, with another 80 minutes of classes after lunch. The school bus takes them home at approximately 2.30pm.

After 3 pm is the time all schools have a steady stream of the older children coming in from the state schools. They will usually just have an 80-minute lesson session. Schools that cater for older students may still be running classes up to 10 pm at night. Some places have now started sessions that run from 6.30 am to 8 am. It is possible that you will be required to work some split shifts, between the hours of 6.30 am (adult classes only) and 9.30 pm. Your housing is usually in an area very close to the school, and you will be able to do shopping etc. during these times or just relax at home. Some schools do have Saturday classes, but it is quite likely that you will be free on Saturdays and Sundays.
