Family 'Curfews' (A Teacher Comments)
|
One of my adult students has a curfew imposed by her parents.
She's 29 years old, and she's intelligent and beautiful, yet she has never been out past 12:30 am, and she gives her parents all of her paycheck. Koreans can claim that this just proves how much family means to people here, but I think it's sad.
I was talking to a girl I met at the gym, who is 34, and her sister is 27 and they both live at home. I told her about how a teacher I knew was getting frustrated because his girlfriend had to be home at 10 every night, and my friend said, "wow - that's really strict, my sister and I don't have to be home until 10:30 - on the weekends." I just looked at her and said, "Yep, you certainly are a little bit luckier."
I really enjoy Korea, and I like my students, and I don't know if they're missing out on a part of life, such as independence and getting to know who you are and what you can do, OR if this sheltered existence is good because...I don't know. This isn't an "I hate Korea" rant. I just felt frustrated, and I just wish I could convince them what they're missing, but who am I to say that our way is any better than their way?
