Most likely your first encounter with a Korean parent will be when you are told there is an open day at the school for 'intending parents' to come and observe. Be very aware of how important this day is to your employer. Your actions, attitude, appearance and rapport with the students will play a huge part in how many students get enrolled into the school. This translates to job security for you, and money for the boss. If you are requested to wear something special for this day, please do so.

Some employers find it difficult to openly criticize your standards of dress but we have known of one employer sending 2 teachers home to brush their hair and take their open sandals off, and for the lady teacher to put tights on to cover her bare legs even though it was an extremely hot day.

The good thing about many of your 'meet the parent' times is that you cannot have long conversations and get held up talking to them because of the language barriers. Most parents will try to be as discreet as possible with disturbing you in the classroom. Many parents will have limited English themselves and may even avoid communicating with you.

Please manage genuine open smiles and have positive body language when dealing with a parent. Use common Korean phases such as kamsa hamnida (thank you) and welcome, goodbye etc. It will always win you a lot of respect if you can make a positive comment about the child and maybe interact with the child so the parent can see that their 'precious child' likes the teacher and is learning.
