Please check with BUT DO NOT officially register at your embassy until after you arrive in Korea.

If you have any concerns prior to going to Korea please email or phone the foreign affairs department of your country (within your own country) to check if any 'travel advisory notice' has been issued for travel to Korea. If a government is concerned about the safety of its citizens entering Korea there should be a 'travel advisory notice' of some description. It is also useful to read newspapers or watch TV reports on Korea but do not make 'panic judgements' regarding media portrayal of events without personally thinking of the bigger picture as the media often 'sensationalize' developments.

Please make a sensible decision and ensure your presence is known by notifying your embassy as soon as you arrive in Korea and have settled into an apartment.

It is important that all foreign citizens register their names along with some personal details such as their location or contact phone numbers etc, at their Government's Embassy.

In the event of a national emergency, such as what happened in Bali when a nightclub was bombed, and many foreigners were killed and hurt, embassies seek to account for the location of any of their nationals who may have been affected.

In situations such as this, anxious family members and friends will certainly be phoning embassies and foreign affairs departments to find out if a person is safe, or in need of urgent help. If the embassy does not have your details on file, then they cannot check on your safety, thus causing extra stress for all parties.

In the event of any national state of emergency such as a possible evacuation (for whatever reason), embassies will each seek to identify how many nationals may need help to leave the country. They will also work out how to safely extract people. Often in such cases, like-minded countries will cooperate. Governments and embassies will issue statements in such circumstances to keep people informed.

All personal information given to your embassy is kept confidential and is not forwarded on to any other government office, Korean immigration office, or similar office or person thus enabling them to 'check up on you.'

Presently many English Teachers are forgetting, or simply failing to register at their embassies. Statistical information of foreign residents will be available to your embassy from the Korean immigration offices, but not nearly enough to quickly 'track down' a specific person easily, or for embassies to be able to organise groups of citizens within specific areas to follow set instructions.

If you are working illegally or do not have a correct visa status etc., then your registration information will record no details of this status.
